Chapter Fourteen

“Fuck you too, Micki!” -Ryann

By the time the bell tolled to signify the end of the school day, Ryann let out an exasperating sigh of relief. She hated this new school and everything about it: the teachers, the students, and the top-notch security. All of it reminded her of how her life had changed; seemingly for the worst. She had only been at Brinton Academy for two weeks and each day she grew to hate Benny’s decision to place her in a school that reminded her of how inmates must feel at Rikers Island.

“It takes some time to get used to.” An unknown voice said from behind her as Ryann lazily grabbed the two binders from underneath her seat. Turning around to face the person who spoke to her, Ryann came face-to-face with a girl who sat in the back row of the classroom and never spoke to anyone. Ryann had always been fascinated by the girl and why she seemed to be a loner. Like Ryann, she was beautiful no doubt but her beauty was unique. She and Ryann were the same height and build and her skin resembled a fresh water lily, soft yet pale. Her slanted but rounded eyes were a dead giveaway to her Chinese-American heritage. Today, she was wearing her hair in a ponytail where soft loose curls dangled down her back.

“What do you mean?” Ryann asked eyeing her suspiciously as if she were trying to figure her out.

“I’m talking about the school. Did your parents explain to you why they sent you to this particular school?”

“No.” Ryann’s brows furrowed in confusion as she was both intrigued by the girl and her words.

“Don’t worry, in time everything will come out. Just give it a little bit of getting used to and it’ll all be much clearer.” Just as the girl got ready to say something else, her phone vibrated in the pocket of her uniform sweater and she took it out to answer it.

“Hello? I’m coming out right now.” She said to whoever was on the other end and hung up. “Sorry about that. I’ve gotta go, my car is outside. Remember what I said, in due time everything will start to make sense to you.” Hurriedly she shuffled to the door of their classroom with Ryann following suit behind her.

“What’s your name?” she asked her.

“Mei. Mei Xiong.” As they both approached the front door, Ryann said her name in her head and a million and one questions flew through her mind as she thought about their brief conversation. Ryann stood and watched as Mei was escorted to the back of a black Cadillac DTS as if she were one of President Obama’s daughters. That was another thing that intrigued Ryann about her; she was really secretive. While she stood and watched the Cadillac pull out of the school’s vast courtyard, Ryann couldn’t wait to pique Mei’s brain about her life.

“So I’m guessing we came to pick you up in the wrong thing?” McKenzie teased from behind the wheel of Juanita’s charcoal grey Dodge Durango.
